Tour of Guangxi 2019 – Stage 1 – Beihai – Beihai : 135,6 km
The 2019 Gree-Tour of Guangxi is a road cycling stage race that is scheduled to take place between 15 and 20 October 2019 in the Chinese province of Guangxi. It will be the 3rd edition of the Tour of Guangxi and the thirty-eighth event of the 2019 UCI World Tour.
Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) won the opening stage of the Tour of Guangxi in Beihai, triumphing in a bunch sprint after three laps of a circuit around the south Chinese city.
Pascal Ackermann (Bora-Hansgrohe) took second place, just inches behind the Colombian, while Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott) finished third.
Gaviria’s victory, his fifth of 2019, will go some way to salvaging an injury-ravaged season and will give the 25-year-old hope that he can repeat his 2017 performance, when he won four stages.
The pan-flat 135km stage was always set to end with a bunch sprint on the wide roads of Beihai, but that didn’t stop Josef Černy (CCC Team), Mikkel Honoré (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Ryan Mullen (Trek-Segafredo) from venturing out into the breakaway early on.
Their task would be a thankless one, though Mullen would later grab the mountains classification jersey for his efforts after leading over the day’s two categorised hills. The trio’s advantage maxed out at 2:45 early on but, with Bahrain-Merida and Bora-Hansgrohe among the teams working on the front of the peloton, it wouldn’t last.
The break was duly caught after 90km of racing, while shortly after it was Rémi Cavagna (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Michael Schwarzmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) who countered. Further back, the chase from the peloton was a determined one, and they, too, were brought back.
In the final 10km, it was Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Soudal) and Julius van den Berg (EF Education First) who tried their luck off the front. With unfavourable terrain and a very small advantage, the sprinter’s teams reabsorbed the pair 3km from the finish.
Bora-Hansgrohe and Mitchelton-Scott were the main teams leading it out on the wide roads heading into the finish, with Ackermann and Trentin looking all set to contest the final 250 metres.
The German launched first, looking all set to add to his 2019 tally of 11 wins. Gaviria would still have his say, though, storming up the inside barriers on his own after jumping out from behind the wheel of Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain-Merida).
It was a close-run thing at the line but, perhaps due to the early launch, Gaviria had just about enough in the tank to take his first victory since May.
