Tour of Germany 2021 – Stage 4 – Erlangen – Nürnberg : 156,3 km
The Deutschland Tour is one of the oldest stage-races in the world, starting its life back in 1911, but it has really struggled to establish itself on the racing calendar, experiencing several long hiatuses throughout the 20th and early 21st century. The race was picked up by ASO in 2018 however and since then we’ve seen two revitalised editions of the Deutschland Tour. With the new races following a four-day format, rather than the old nine-day format, the battle for the general classification rages throughout, making for one thrilling and action-packed race. The new four-day format is very different to the older editions and does away with the time-trial in favour of four Classic-esque stages. Each stage is like a one-day race, with the most consistent finisher across the four taking the overall title.
Bora-Hansgrohe dug deep to counter a flurry of attacks and finish one-two in the general classification of the Deutschland Tour, Nils Politt taking the title and teammate Pascal Ackermann taking second overall, four seconds back. Politt had taken the race leader’s jersey on stage 3 after a solo victory in Erlangen.
Alexander Kristoff of UAE Team Emirates won the sprint finish in Nürnberg on Sunday, his second stage victory of the four-day race. The Norwegian would also place third in the GC standings.
Ackermann finished second on stage 4 and secured the sprint classification title. Luca Mozzato (B&B Hotels p/b KTM) was third in the bunch sprint.
“As expected, the other teams went all in today. Somehow, we managed to still get the better in the end, but it was really hard work,” said Politt, who earned the first GC victory of his career.
“With two stage wins, and one and two in GC, there was nothing more we could have hoped for. When Almeida attacked it was a critical situation and I had to ride myself for a while. But in the end, all went well and that’s all that counts.”
The final stage between Erlangen and Nürmberg was only 156 kilometers but delivered six categorised climbs. The entire stage was one of multiple attacks that Bora-Hansgrohe chased down all day.
Ackermann said he knew he would have taken enough bonus second with a victory Sunday to steal the overall title form his teammate.
“But to be honest, Nils really deserves that victory. He rode a lot at the front today and I was hanging in there, fighting to don’t get dropped. We all did a great job this week and I am super happy with my stage win [stage 1] and the Green Jersey.”
