La Vuelta 2017 – Stage 10 – Caravaca – Alhama de Murcia : 164,8 km
The 2017 Vuelta a España is a three-week Grand Tour cycling stage race scheduled to take place in Spain between 19 August and 10 September 2017. The race will be the 72nd edition of the Vuelta a España and will be the final Grand Tour of the 2017 cycling season. The race is scheduled to start in Nîmes, France and finish in Madrid. It will be the first time the race has started in France and only the third time it has started outside Spain, after 1997 (Portugal) and 2009 (Netherlands).
Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) claimed his second victory of the 2017 Vuelta a España, getting the better of Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) in a two-up sprint after the duo had forged clear on the descent of the Collado Bermejo.
The Italian, who won a bunch sprint in Tarragona on stage 4, was part of a four-man group that went clear from the 20-strong breakaway on the way up the first-category climb, and by the bottom of the 20km descent just Rojas stood between him and the victory.
And in truth, the Spaniard didn’t put up much of a fight. He led through the final right-hand bend and opened up his sprint from range, giving Trentin ample time to hide in the slipstream before surging through in the final 100 metres – at which point Rojas simply sat up and acknowledged defeat.
“I really wanted it. It was for a while I was thinking about this stage because the climb was hard, but it was a steady grind. It was something that I can handle pretty well,” said Trentin, who made it four wins so far for Quick-Step at this Vuelta.
“I knew the downhill was really technical. For me it was good having Rojas in the front group because he was really, really good going down. I could just follow him. To be honest, when he was really pushing, I’m a good downhiller I think, but I was a bit in trouble to follow him. We could distance all the other guys on the downhill, then it was good in the sprint.”
Chris Froome (Team Sky) retained his overall lead, despite a spirited onslaught from Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) on the long and sinuous descent, which was made all the more treacherous by the wet weather earlier in the day. Froome finished alongside most of his rivals, though there was a significant development as Nicolas Roche (BMC Racing) produced a spirited descent of his own to finish almost half a minute clear of the GC group.
The Irishman, who started the day third overall, led the pursuit of Nibali and pressed on when the Italian was caught, holding on as the road flattened out in the final couple of kilometres to draw level with Esteban Chaves (Orica-Scott) in second place overall, 36 seconds down on Froome.
“It was a good day,” said Roche. “It wasn’t really the plan to go on the descent until I saw Vincenzo opening a gap. I tried to get around the other GC riders, then came onto Vincenzo, then opened up a bit of gap, and I said ‘let’s go, see what happens’.”
How it unfolded
179 riders set out from Caravaca, where the rain was already falling, and it was soon apparent there would be an intense fight to make it into the breakaway, given the nature of the parcours. Michel Kreder (Aqua Blue) and Rohan Dennis tried to get away in the opening kilometres but were reeled back in, setting the tone for a fast and intense – if uneventful – start to the day.
The terrain tilted gently downhill towards the half-way point, but even so the average speed of 52km/h across the first two hours told the story of how none of the many breakaway attempts were sticking. The bunch split briefly in the wind and rain just after the 50km mark, but it was soon back together, with groups continuing to ping off the front of the bunch without success.
It was only with 90km on the clock, and 75km to go, that the breakaway finally formed. As the peloton split into three groups, 20 riders emerged at the head of the race: Niki Terpstra, Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Julien Bernard (Trek-Segafredo), José Joaquín Rojas, Marc Soler (Movistar), Nico Denz, Alexandre Geniez (AG2R-La Mondiale), Michael Morkov (Katusha-Alpecin), Bert-Jan Lindeman, Juanjo Lobato (LottoNL-Jumbo), Luis León Sánchez (Astana), Valerio Agnoli, Domen Novak (Bahrain-Merida), Arnaud Courteille (FDJ), Jacques Janse Van Rensburg (Dimension Data), Rafael Reis, and Jaime Roson (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA).
Finally, it was something everyone was happy with, and you could sense the relief in the peloton as the foot was taken off the gas. All of a sudden the breakaway had five minutes and it appeared the stage honours would be theirs to fight out.
With 40km remaining, the endgame begun as the break swung onto the third-category Alto del Morron de Totana, where Janse Van Rensburg soon upped the pace and rode the rest of the riders off his wheel. The South African took a 25-second advantage over the top, with Trentin, Lindeman, and Reis following in a trio, but there wasn’t much of a descent before the road soon pitched up again for the rather more difficult Collado Bermejo.
Rojas, Roson, and Terpstra replaced that original trio in pursuit of Janse Van Rensburg, and just after he was caught, Roson tried and failed to get away on his own. As Terpstra fell away, Trentin came back for Quick-Step and flew up to the head of the race to make it four out front.
Twenty-five seconds back down the mountain, Luis Leon Sanchez, riding with added motivation with the stage finishing in his home region, led a chase group of six, along with Agnoli, Courteille, Soler, Geniez, and De Marchi. That gap was maintained all the way to the top of the climb, which topped out with 21km remaining and left treacherous descent to the finish.
Back in the peloton, still five minutes down as they started the climb, Nibali sent his Bahrain-Merida teammates to the front, lending the bunch an unfamiliar image as Froome and his Sky teammates had to ride a few places down. By the time it was just Franco Pelizzotti left with Nibali, the effects of their pace setting was evident as the peloton had thinned to no more than 30 riders. Just shy of the summit Pelizotti peeled off and Nibali accelerated, taking pole position into the descent.
While Nibali opened up a slim lead thanks to his descending skills, Rojas was using his local knowledge to force the issue out front, with Trentin and Roson able to follow his lines through the multitude of hairpins while Janse Ven Rensburg yo-yoed precariously off the back. Behind them Geniez, who had to unclip and swing a leg out on at least five occasions as he took every risk possible, was joined by Soler in a chasing duo but they would never make it into contention.
Nibali was doing real damage with his aggression, but with around 15km to go he was caught by Roche, with Froome and the rest of the favourites soon also coming into view in what was a single-file line of 15 riders. Roche cracked on, however, taking advantage as the other GC riders perhaps relaxed slightly in the knowledge that the obvious aggressor had been brought to heel.
Up front, the road flattened out in the final few kilometres, by which point Trentin and Rojas had carved out an advantage over Janse Van Rensburg and Roson. They traded turns to ensure it would be just them two in the home straight, even if it turned out to be an uneven contest.
“Now we have to get number five,” said Trentin with a smile, with Quick-Step now well on course to match their victory tallies from the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France.
