La Roue Tourangelle 2022 – Château-Renault – Tours : 202 km
La Roue Tourangelle is one of 16 one-day races to make up the wider French Road Cycling Cup – a year-long, points based competition. Since its debut edition in 2002, the race has routinely fallen in late March and slap bang in the middle of the Spring Classics season. While it’s a little too young to be considered a Classic itself, it does often follow a hilly route that heavily favours the one-day racing specialists. The exact route changes every year, but it almost always finishes in the city of Tours – the largest city in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa-Samic) won La Roue Tourangelle on Sunday in Tours. He latched onto the wheels of a three-rider Cofidis train and launched his final move in the final 200 metres, coming around Bryan Coquard, who finished second. Sandy Dujardin (TotalEnergies) secured the final spot on the podium.
It was the 70th career victory for 31-year-old Frenchman, who finished earlier this week at Brugge-De Panne.
“We were outnumbered at the start compared to the other teams,” Bouhanni noted on the six-rider squad at the 202km race. “We put Kévin Ledanois to drive after 100 kilometers. This race was complicated with the series of bumps in the final, but the most important thing for me was that I got to the sprint, even if I wasn’t taken.
“It was necessary to lock the cobbled parts until the arrival on the final circuit. Kévin Vauquelin, who took a last big stint to come back to the breakaway, was very important, as was Alan Riou. Laurent Pichon and Kévin Vauquelin did a great job on the last lap.”
