Critérium du Dauphiné 2017 – Stage 6 – Parc des Oiseaux Villars-les-Dombes – La Motte-Servolex : 147,5 km
The 2017 Critérium du Dauphiné is a road cycling stage race that is scheduled to take place between 4 and 11 June. It will be the 69th edition of the Critérium du Dauphiné and will be the twenty-third event of the 2017 UCI World Tour.
Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) beat BMC’s Richie Porte, Sky’s Chris Froome and his teammate Fabio Aru in a throw to the line after the four distanced their rivals on the fearsome Mont du Chat climb and the equally fearsome twisting descent on stage 6 of the Criterium du Dauphine.
Fuglsang and Aru attacked together near the summit of the climb, with Aru first to the summit. He was joined by the other three on the nerve-racking descent with Froome managing to go clear on the series of narrow roads and tight corners.
The quartet came back together on the final flat roads, with Froome chasing down a late attack from Fuglsang. However, the Dane still had something left for the sprint as Froome closed the door to Porte along the barriers.
Porte, Froome and Fuglsang threw their bikes at the line with Fuglsang winning by the width of a tire. Froome was third with Aru just behind.
Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale), Dan Martin (Quick-Step Floors) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) finished 50 seconds down, with Alberto Contador (Trek-Segafredo) further back at 1:06.
With Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) losing several minutes on the stage, Porte pulled on the leader’s yellow jersey. He now leads Froome by 39 seconds on the general classification, with Fuglsang third overall at 1:15. Another mountain stage – to Alpe d’Huez – looms on Saturday.
