Albert Achterhes Profronde van Drenthe 2023 – Emmen – Hoogeveen : 143,2 km
The Albert Achterhes Profronde van Drenthe, or Ronde van Drenthe for short, is a tough one-day race that has been held almost every year since 1960. Contested in the northeastern corner of the Netherlands and given the nickname of ‘The Hell of the North,’ it is not hard to see where the race takes its inspiration from, with the inclusion of multiple cobbled sectors promising a tough day out in the Drenthe region. Featuring both tough sectors of pavé and long swathes of tarmac, the race is made even more strenuous by an enraging crosswind that often gusts in off the North Sea. The most challenging feature of the route itself is the well-known VAM-berg climb, which is an artificial hill, sitting on top of an old landfill zone. The climb is just 750m in length, but it’s very narrow and has ramps up to 23%!
