Tour of Germany 2019 – Stage 2 – Marburg – Göttingen : 202 km
The Deutschland Tour (English: Tour of Germany and sometimes Deutschland-Rundfahrt in German) is the most important multi-stage road bicycle race in Germany. Initially the race was held in May/June, but from 2005 until 2008 it was moved to August as part of the UCI ProTour. On October 16, 2008 the organizers announced that the 2009 edition would be cancelled, following the doping cases that were revealed in the sport of cycling. Marketing chiefs said they were unable to finance the nine-day race due to a lack of interested sponsors after the latest revelations of cyclists testing positive for the blood-booster CERA. A revival for 2017 was announced on 8 March 2016. In 2018, the A.S.O. revived the Deutschland Tour and included a 4-stage-race into a cycling festival.
Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) scored an emphatic victory on stage 2 of the Deutschland Tour in Göttingen, out-powering Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) and Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck-Quickstep) in the bunch sprint.
With the stage win and time bonus, the Norwegian swapped the points jersey for that of the overall race leader off the shoulders of stage 1 winner Pascal Ackermann, who missed the front split on an undulating run-in to Göttingen and lost 16 minutes.
Kristoff leads Colbrelli by 10 seconds with Lampaert third at 12 seconds.
The day was dominated by Lampaert’s young teammate Remco Evenepoel, who spent the better part of 100km off the front solo. The double junior world champion held on until 9km to go when he was finally reeled in.
“I suffered all day,” Kristoff said. “I broke away in the middle of the stage but then I managed to get back into the group where, as the kilometers went by, I started to feel better. On the last ascent I lost contact, but managed to get back on. In the sprint I felt really good. When Colbrelli jumped I was a bit boxed in, but then I managed to pass [him].”
It was Kristoff’s first win since the Tour de Suisse, and he said he is on track to aim for the World Championships. For the overall Deutschland Tour, it is a different story.
“For the overall GC I think it’s difficult because today I was at the limit and tomorrow it will be even harder, but I will definitely try.”
