Tour of Croatia 2017 – Stage 1 – Osijek – Koprivnica – 227 km
The Tour of Croatia is a men’s cycling stage race that takes place in Croatia. It is part of the UCI Europe Tour and is rated by the UCI as a 2.1 event, the third tier of professional stage races. The race takes place in April in the build-up to the Giro d’Italia. The event is organised by Vladimir Miholjević, a former professional cyclist.
Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates) collected his first victory of the season on Tuesday at the opening stage of the Tour of Croatia, outsprinting a Nippo-Vini Fantini duo and Italian champion Giacomo Nizzolo after a long day in the saddle.
The 227km route from Osijek to Koprivnica up the north east coast of the country was largely flat, save for a late third-category punch, and Modolo took the smartest line and showed the strongest legs in the sprint after Trek-Segafredo had taken the reins for Nizzolo.
Nippo’s Eduard Grosu and Nicolas Marini also sprang past Nizzolo to take second and third respectively, though both bashed their handlebars after crossing the line, clearly feeling this was a missed opportunity.
Despite having the most prominent lead-out in the final kilometre, Nizzolo, who won the opening stage last year, was already back on Modolo and the Nippo duo when he started his sprint, and was unable to make up any ground, with Caja Rural’s Dylan Page pushing him down to fifth on the line.
