Thüringen Ladies Tour 2022 WE – Stage 6 – Altenburg – Altenburg : 104,3 km
The LOTTO Thüringen Ladies Tour is one of the oldest stage races on the women’s racing calendar, with its debut edition dating all the way back to 1988. Comprising six stages, the race is also one of the longest on the calendar. The six-day event, based in Germany, returned last year after a one-year hiatus, largely thanks to a remarkable crowdfunding campaign. Citing a lack of finance to cover the extra costs needed to host the event in a safe manner during the pandemic, the race organisers appealed to their fans to raise €35,000 and in the end fundraised almost €47,000. We are delighted to see the event continue, with this year’s edition featuring race coverage for only the second time in its history.
Alexandra Manly (BikeExchange-Jayco) won the uphill drag race to the finish line in Altenburg for her fourth stage victory of the week and took the overall crown at the Lotto Thüringen Ladies Tour.
Marta Lach (Ceratizit-WNT Pro Cycling) finished second on the stage and Silvia Zanardi (BePink) was third. With four podiums across the six days of racing, Lach secured second place in the general classification. Zanardi took fourth on GC, just four seconds off that podium behind third-placed Femke Gerritse (Parkhotel Valkenburg).
The 104.3km final day was filled with attacks, with a small group escaping with 65km to go but the attempt to stay away did not survive.
“The girls rode on the front all day, they controlled the race, and I just got to sit and be patient and go for it on the final climb and into the finish. I didn’t do much, they just controlled the race for me and I’m so thankful,” Manly said.
“I was really just trying to stay focused and keep switched on, so that I didn’t crash or do something silly. My teammates were incredible today, and every day of this week, and I’m just so grateful to them.”
