Paris-Camembert 2021 – Pont-Audemer – Camembert : 210 km

Paris-Camembert traditionally falls in the transitional period between the cobbled classics and the Ardennes classics, providing those riders readying themselves for an extended classics campaign with a chance to hone their form. This year, however, the race was postponed until June due to the pandemic. This one-day race, held largely within the French region of Normandy, is also usually one of the first big events in the French Road Cycling Cup series, a year-long competition where riders compete across a number of French one-day races for points. Whilst no longer able to use this race to build their form ahead of the Ardennes Classics, the riders shall lineup here for a chance at winning one of the most coveted prizes in all of cycling – their body weight in Lepetit Camembert. The race first debuted back in 1934 and has since hosted 81 editions, only cancelling on three occasions due to the outbreak of World War II. The route has always toured Normandy, but in recent years it has swapped its traditional start and finish towns of Magnanville and Vimoutiers to Port Audemar and Livarot. This change has also meant that the route now features a number of new climbs, like the Côte de la Becquetiere, Côte de Tortisambert and Butte des Fondits. These three climbs fall in the latter half of the route and share a lot of things in common. They’re ridden twice, they’re short and they’re devilishly steep. The Butte des Fondits is the hardest of the three and the one that most often dictates the outcome of the race. At 1.2km-long and with an average gradient of 8.2%, this climb plays right into the hands of the puncheurs and those riders with an explosive uphill kick. The final ascent also falls just 10km from the finish in Livarot, making it an ideal launchpad for a late attack.
