National Championships 2016 – Czech & Slovakia – Kyjov – Kyjov – 172,1 km
The Slovakia National Road Race Championships take place annually and decide the national champion for the year in various categories. The winner of the championship gains the right to wear a distinctive jersey with a Slovak flag during races. The Czech National Road Race Championships are held annually to decide the Czech cycling champions in the road race discipline, across various categories. The event was first held in 1997.
Juraj Sagan wins his first Slovakian National Championships, breaking his brother Peter’s run of five consecutive victories
A Sagan will yet again wear the Slovakian champion’s jersey for the next 12 months, but for the first time since 2010 it won’t be Peter Sagan.
Peter’s brother Juraj took the glory in Sunday’s road race, with the world champion finishing 35 seconds off the pace.
A year older than his brother, Juraj has found himself in Peter’s shadow for much of his cycling career. While his brother has won a World Championship, a one-day monument and four consecutive Tour de France points jerseys, Juraj’s only win was at the 2009 GP Boka.
Due to the slightly odd nature of the Slovakian National Championships, Sagan didn’t actually win the race to claim the title. Since 2000 the race has been mixed with the National Championships of the Czech Republic.
Roman Kreuziger (Tinkoff) won the overall race to claim the Czech title, finishing six seconds ahead of Zdenek Stybar (Etixx-Quick Step).
Juraj Sagan split the two Czech riders to win the Slovak title and Peter finished in fourth overall.
