MTB Swiss Epic 2022 XCM – Stage 3 – Laax – Laax : 63 km
The 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic explores the breath-taking trails of Graubünden as it traverses the Alps from Arosa, to Laax before concluding in the now traditional finish in the Race Village of Davos. Taking in 11 700 metres of elevation gain and 11 850 metres of spectacular descending the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic route totals 359 kilometres in length. Highlights include the magnificent Hörnli and Runca Trails; as well as an ascent to 2 546 metres above sea level on the Urdenfürggli. For teams taking part in the sold-out 2022 edition of the race the spectacular riding will be matched by the hearty Swiss hospitality and the camaraderie of returning to Graubünden’s famed trails once again.
It is a singletrack-filled day of trail exploration below the tree-line that kicks off with The Track, from Falera to Ladir. The route then descends past Ilanz’s Dominican Convent and follows the Rhein downstream in search of an easy crossing of the Rheinschlucht. Climbing then recommences past landmarks like Lake Cauma, as well as the villages of Fidaz and Alp Foppa. The climb to Startgels is gradual, but, sadly, there will be no time for a five-course meal at Ustria Startgels before dropping into the Runca Trail – one of Europe’s longest flow trails and an International Mountain Bicycling Association award winning singletrack to boot. Most of the final 10 kilometres are downhill and more than half of them are on the Runca Trail, meaning that speed and excitement are the final order of the stage before kicking back and relaxing in the race village.
