MTB Swiss Epic 2022 XCM – Stage 2 – Arosa – Laax : 79 km
The 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic explores the breath-taking trails of Graubünden as it traverses the Alps from Arosa, to Laax before concluding in the now traditional finish in the Race Village of Davos. Taking in 11 700 metres of elevation gain and 11 850 metres of spectacular descending the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic route totals 359 kilometres in length. Highlights include the magnificent Hörnli and Runca Trails; as well as an ascent to 2 546 metres above sea level on the Urdenfürggli. For teams taking part in the sold-out 2022 edition of the race the spectacular riding will be matched by the hearty Swiss hospitality and the camaraderie of returning to Graubünden’s famed trails once again.
Stage 2 of the 2022 SPAR Swiss Epic features both the highest point in the 2022 race as well as the race’s longest descent that passes the lowest point of this year’s edition, meaning teams will have to prepare for stage that tests limits but rewards with thrills aplenty. The Urdenfürggli, a bridleway which dates back to the fourteenth century, dominates the opening 15 kilometres. From the summit, an 8-kilometre-long trail drops into Lenzerheide, the home of Switzerland’s mountain biking World Cup XCO and Downhill tracks. More descending then follows, criss-crossing the Landwasser river towards Graubünden’s administrative capital, Chur. The final 30 kilometres of the stage require a climb through the Rhein Gorge – a real sting in the tail. However, the views of the turqoise waters of Lake Cauma, set in an emerald forest straight from a Brothers Grimm fairy-tale, provide a fitting finale to a marathon day.
