MTB Marathon World Championships 2021 WE XCM – Capoliveri – Isle Of Elba : 80 km
Marathon is one of the many sub-disciplines of mountain biking and, arguably, the most physically demanding of the lot. Races typically cover distances of around 100km and are held over literal mountains, not just your regular hills and slopes found on most cross-country circuits. The UCI inaugurated the discipline into their Mountain Biking World Championships back in 2003 and for the first year it was held during the same window as its sister disciplines, cross-country and downhill. However, in the years that have followed it has branched out and become its own standalone event, typically taking place in a different area to the other races. While Marathon courses can change quite dramatically throughout the season, the UCI’s events follow a certain set of rules which ensure some degree of formality. Race distances must fall between 60km and 160km and no circuit can be covered more than three times – a stark contrast to the cross-country discipline where courses can be as short as 4km and lapped over a dozen times.
