Lotto Belgium Tour 2021 – Prologue – Chimay – Chimay : 4,4 km

Beginning in 2012, the Lotto Belgium Tour returns to the calendar after a year’s forced absence due to the pandemic. Formerly known as the Lotto-Decca Tour, the Women’s Elite elite stage race is a 2.1 ranked event that takes place over four days in Belgium. Taking place over the course of four days, the race begins with an opening prologue, preceding the three road stages that will decide the overall winner. This year’s race was originally scheduled to be completed on June 27. Instead, this year’s Lotto Belgium Tour will begin with an opening prologue on June 22, eventually finishing three days later. As such, it is possible that many riders will ride the Belgium stage race in preparation for a big crack at La Course. The women’s race takes in a variety of tough climbs and cobbled sectors, providing an enthralling few days of racing. The final stage has finished in Geraardsbergen in every single edition of the race, taking in the iconic Muur van Geraardsbergen. The final showdown promises to offer a delightful taste of the Flemish climbs, with the Bosberg also included on the route.

Ellen van Dijk (Trek-Segafredo) has won the prologue at the Lotto Belgium Tour. The time trial specialist covered the 4.4km course with a winning time of 5:34 to beat her teammate Elynor Backstedt, while Belgium National Team’s Jolien D’hoore finished in third in Chimay.

Van Dijk has secured the first leader’s jersey of the four-day race as the competition resumes for stage 1’s 112.6km race from Blankenberge to Bruges on Wednesday.

“I am very happy to win this prologue,” said van Dijk. “It’s nice for my morale after a long period with shit form – I have not had good form for a while, so it’s nice to gain a win here. It was just a nice one – for me and the team!”

The cold and wet weather was no obstacle for the former world champion who won the short stage by just under three seconds.

“It was very wet, but the course was straightforward; there was only one corner where you couldn’t go full,” explained van Dijk. “It was a nice course; I liked it. The first part was uphill, the second downhill. It was a good course for me, and when I started, I wanted to go for a top result. Time trials never feel great; I felt I couldn’t really push enough during the ride. But it was enough in the end, so I am super happy with that.”
