Challenge de Mallorca 2021 – Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana – Lloseta – Deià : 158,6 km
Challenge Mallorca is the name given to four distinct but related one-day races that take place on the Spanish island of Mallorca over a four-day period, often at the start of the season. As it usually takes place in late January, this event is a stomping ground for world-class pros looking to start their new seasons with a bang. The event was first established back in 1992 and featured five one-day races over five days, although this was cut down to four in 2012 due to financial complications. The organisers tend to market the event as a ‘Tour of Majorca’ despite the fact that it has never been classed as a multi-day stage race. There is an unofficial ‘overall’ winner crowned at the end of the series however, which goes to the rider who has completed the four courses in the least accumulated time. Because the event is made up of four separate races, teams can swap riders in and out of their squads between race days. As a result, we often see teams arrive in Mallorca with mega squads of up to 20 riders, each one eager to kickstart their seasons and get some racing in the legs.
