BinckBank Tour 2017 – Stage 3 – Blankenberge – Ardooie : 185 km
The 2017 BinckBank Tour is a road cycling stage race that is scheduled to take place between 7 and 13 August. It is a continuation of the Eneco Tour but was renamed following a change in title sponsor. As such, it will be the 13th edition, the first one under the name BinckBank Tour. It will also be the 29th event of the 2017 UCI World Tour.
Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) won stage 3 of the BinckBank Tour, beating Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo) and Rudy Barbier (AG2R La Mondiale) in a bunch finish in Ardooie, Belgium.
It was Sagan’s second stage victory of the week after he claimed Monday’s opener, and the winner’s time bonus lifts the world champion to third overall, five seconds behind race leader Stefan Küng (BMC).
The stage seemed destined to end in a bunch sprint from the outset, through Jempy Drucker (BMC) almost sprang a surprise with a canny late attack in the final kilometre on the rain-soaked finishing circuit.
Sagan delivered a well-timed sprint effort to overhaul Drucker and claim the 99th victory of his professional career. The Slovak won in Ardooie a year ago, and was well-positioned throughout the finale here, avoiding a crash outside the flamme rouge that disrupted some of the other sprinters.
The day’s early break featured Frederik Backaert (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Sander Cordeel (Veranda’s Willems Crelan), Piet Allegaert (Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise) Kristijan Koren (Cannondale-Drapac) and Elmar Reinders (Roompot – Nederlandse Loterij), but the sprinters’ teams never allowed the quintet to establish a sizeable margin.
Indeed, the move was almost shut down with 50 kilometres to go, when Orica-Scott and then Lotto Soudal attempted to split the peloton, but once the pace in the main field relented, Backaert et al stretched their advantage back out to a minute.
Backaert duly won all three of the Golden Kilometre intermediate sprints in the finale, but by then the intensity was beginning to ratchet up in the main peloton ahead of the inevitable bunch finish. The break was eventually caught on the final lap of the finishing circuit in Ardooie, giving Sagan the opportunity to claim his second victory there in as many years.
