Tour of Germany 2018 – Stage 4 – Lorsch – Stuttgart : 200 km
The Deutschland Tour (English: Tour of Germany and sometimes Deutschland-Rundfahrt in German) is the most important multi-stage road bicycle race in Germany. Initially the race was held in May/June, but from 2005 until 2008 it was moved to August as part of the UCI ProTour. On October 16, 2008 the organizers announced that the 2009 edition would be cancelled, following the doping cases that were revealed in the sport of cycling. Marketing chiefs said they were unable to finance the nine-day race due to a lack of interested sponsors after the latest revelations of cyclists testing positive for the blood-booster CERA. The race has not been held since, but a revival for 2017 was announced on 8 March 2016. In 2018, the A.S.O. revived the Deutschland Tour and included a 4-stage-race into a cycling festival. From 23 August to 26 August 2018, the Deutschland Tour will take place in the South-Western region of Germany.
Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) powered to a convincing stage victory on the final day of the Deutschland Tour after coming close in stages 2 and 3.
The German fell shy of overhauling Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida), who cruised to second place on the stage to seal the overall by six seconds over Politt. Maximilian Schachmann (Quick-Step Floors) finished third overall.
Politt was thrilled to finally get his first victory after turning professional in 2013.
“It’s unbelievable. I really can’t believe it,” Politt said. “I think I will have to watch the race again tomorrow and then maybe I can believe it. I was so close to the win in the last two days when I guess I made some small mistakes. But today I waited a little bit longer to go at 200 meters to the finish line. I am really, really happy.”
The overall victory further confirmed Mohoric’s talents after his overall win in the BinckBank Tour and his stage of the Giro d’Italia. The 2013 U23 World Champion also took home the points and best young rider classifications.
