O Gran Camiño 2023 – Stage 2 – Tui – A Guarda (Monte Trega) : 184,3 km
Born from the ashes of the Volta a Galicia – a multi-day stage race that was struck off the professional calendar in 2000 – Gran Camiño is a new addition to the UCI’s European calendar and joined just last year. The first ever tour of Galicia took place way back in 1933, but it struggled to find a regular spot on the calendar during the time of the Spanish Civil War and Second World War. In the mid-80s it finally found solid footing and, for the next 15 years, it became a big target for riders looking to snatch a result. This year’s race will follow the same, four-day format and feature a very similar route, with three hilly stages followed by a final-day individual time trial.
Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) laid down a major marker in the first day of racing of his 2023 season, soloing to the Gran Camiño victory on Monte Trega.
Expected to be facing down the already dominant Tadej Pogačar in Paris-Nice next month, Vingegaard’s form was unknown until today, where he stormed away to take the first race lead ahead of Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) by 21 seconds.
Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) came across in third at 24 seconds.
The opening stage from Muralla de Lugo was cancelled due to a rare snowstorm, so Vingegaard is the first leader of the race after stage 2.
“This win feels very good. I felt excellent during the day”, Vingegaard said. “The guys worked hard. Luckily I had the legs to finish it off. The form is good, but I knew that beforehand. It was a tough climb, not least because of the cobbles in the last kilometre. I pushed myself to the limit. I wanted to win, especially for my girlfriend. Now we have the jersey, and of course, we want to keep it. The goal is to win the GC.
“It’s a very satisfying feeling to be able to finish off an excellent team effort in this way. Three guys in the team usually ride for our development team. It is impressive to see them holding their own here among the WorldTour teams. Everyone has done their bit. Hopefully, we can show some good things in the coming days.”
